Am I eligible to join a family support group?
If you are concerned about someone else’s alcohol and or drug use and live in Australia you are eligible to join the group. The person can be a family member, friend or someone that interacts with you in your life.
How are the groups run?
For the first half of each group, we run through a topic providing you with information and resources to help support you and those around you.
In the second half we give individuals the opportunity to share their experiences (if they wish) and connect with the other members of the group. This is done in a safe, uninterrupted and respectful environment. Each session runs this way.
The group is run online via Zoom. A secure link is sent before each group so attendees can participate in a safe, secure setting.
What sort of support and education will I receive?
Connecting with others with the same lived experience gives us a sense of not being alone.
It allows us to gain insight and learn from their experiences. Our groups also have an education component where we deliver sessions on relevant topics that can include guest speakers.
Do I have to speak?
Everyone is invited to share, however, if you wish to remain silent and listen, that is fine too.
Do I have to attend all the groups?
You can come as little, or as often as you like.
Who runs the group?
Each group is facilitated by trained volunteer family members who know the impact of a loved one’s substance use.
When are the groups run?
The online support group runs on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 6pm – 7pm.
